Pew Reupholstering

Uncomfortable church pews can be a distracting inconvenience for churchgoers. Instead of focusing their attention and participating in the church service, they may be shifting around trying to get comfortable on a worn pew. Thriving churches need comfortable pew seating to ensure that their members are fully engaged in worship. Unfortunately, pew padding & finish can show signs of wear and tear after years of use. If the seats on your used church pews show signs of aging, you should consult a pew restoration service company.

Not only will pew restoration spruce up your old church pews, but this service can also save you money in the future. The cost of pew reupholstering is half (or less) of the total cost of purchasing new church pews. Since you can re-upholster & refinish pews over and over again, you could end up saving five to six times more over the life of the church than you would have by destroying otherwise old and rotted pews. Pew reupholstering can also improve the overall look of your church sanctuary, creating a beautiful, fresh look for your services. If worn fabric and sagging cushions tell you it's time to improve the look and the feel of your church seating, reupholstering may be the way to go. Remember, the ear can only hear what the rear can endure. Contact us to schedule an appointment with one of our experts or call 1-951-353-1513.

Make sure the company either includes the replacement of the anchors in the floor or they at least have the ability to replace them. Make sure dimensions of the pew layout are taken before the pews are moved so they can be put back where they came from.

All wood church pews: If the finish is worn out or outdated, consider having them refinished by a pew restoration company. New kneelers may be appropriate at the same time as well. You may think about adding a cushion to the seat if the pews are uncomfortable. Pews should be disassembled, transported to and from the church and refinished then installed by the pew restoration company you choose to work with.

Seat only upholstered: If the church pews you would like to upgrade are already cushioned the seats can simply be removed from the pews, the old foam & fabric stripped off and all new foam and fabric applied. The fabric should be properly stretched and the correct amount and density of foam should be used.

Seat- and Back-upholstered or Full-upholstered: If you are considering reupholstering a fully upholstered pew, (foam padded seats and backs—with fabric that also covers the back exterior facing the pew to the rear) the pews should be fully disassembled. You'll need to have book racks, card and cup holders, all molding strips, and the supports removed. The old fabric is cut away, staples removed, the deteriorated padding is removed and then new foam and fabric is attached. The pew seats & backs are then ready to be transported back to the church, reassembled and anchored to the floor.

Pew Restoration, Pew Refinishing, Pew Reupholstering For The Pieces Of A Church Pew

The Wood: If the wood on your pews is scratched & dirty or looks poor you can try cleaning it with a high quality wood cleaner or have it refinished. Pew refinishing involves disassembling the pew, sanding the wood parts to natural wood, staining it and then applying sealer & clear top coats. Select the stain color & sheen of your choice when working with the pew restoration company.

The Fabric: Your best course of action is to replace the fabric. Insist on stretchable yet strong fabrics that will not wrinkle. Nylon or Nylon blend fabric protected with Scotch Guard® or equal is recommended by most pew reupholstering experts because it can be cleaned with any water or solvent based cleaner. Olefin, though less expensive, is harder to clean. Scotch Guard's effectiveness decreases after cleaning the fabric, so pew restoration services will advise you to use spray-on Scotch Guard to retreat the fabric after cleaning & years of use.

The Foam: Replacing the foam in your pews will help improve the level of comfort your churchgoers enjoy and will extend the life of the fabric. Ask the pew restoration consultants about the density and quality the foam they will use.

Pew Restoration, Pew Refinishing, Pew Reupholstering Hints for Used Church Pews

Here are several checkpoints that will insure a pew refinishing service will meet your needs:

  • When consulting a professional pew refinishing or pew restoration service, check the prices, references, and experience of the company. Find out about the quality of the material the upholsterer will be using.
  • Ask the pew refinishing service to refinish and or reupholster just one pew to see their work. If the cap rails along the tops of your used church pews are worn you may consider cleaning them or even refinishing if necessary.
  • If you have all wood pews you may consider using loose, high-density cushions, which usually include fabric-covered buttons and piping.
  • Color coordinate your new fabrics with your carpeting. * Purchase extra material from the vendor when you place your order for future issues that come up. Keep fabric remnants on hand for quick repairs.
  • Be sure to work with a restoration expert that will disassemble, transport, re-assemble and install the pews as the original manufacturer did.

To properly restore your pews they need to be disassembled.

PEWS SHOULD ALWAYS GET DISASSEMBLED UNLESS THEY ARE NAILED & GLUED TOGETHER. VERY RARELY WOULD WE NOT DISASSEMBLE THE PEWS TO RE-UPHOLSTER OR REFINISH THEM.
